Hypotheses

Method

Hypotheses

  1. Hypothesis 1: There will be a higher mean accuracy of the signs prefaced with picture elaboration techniques  than the signs prefaced with word elaboration techniques.

  2. Hypothesis 2: There will be a greater mean accuracy at the immediate testing phase than at at delayed testing phase.

  3. Interaction: The greatest accuracy will be at immediate testing responding to signs prefaced with the picture elaboration techniques.

Word elaboration signs(hard to envision): grow, many, good, nice, day, warm, fun, beautiful

Total Signs

Picture elaboration signs (easy to envision): rural, pick, friends, people, sun, happy, orchard, apple

KEY POINTS:

  • I had a group of my peers rate on a scale of 1-7 how easy the sign was to envision or imagine in your head. Based on the class ratings, I found the mean for each sign and split the signs into two categories: signs that would be prefaced with a picture elaboration and signs that would be prefaced with a word elaboration.

  • The immediate phase is right after the learning video while the delayed phase is after the demographic section to provide a distraction

  1. Participants

  • Targeting Kenyon Students through SONA(online survey platform)

    • Number of total participants=68

    • 18-23 years old

    • No other involvement in other Kenyon ASL studies, to avoid prior exposure to the ASL signs

    • 52% of participants had no exposure to ASL

   2.  Materials

  • Learning Video

  • Testing Videos

    • clips of each sign being signed without the elaboration cues
  • Demographic Questions

    • 6 demographic questions to serve as a distraction interval and gauge characteristics of the participants

    • Examples:

      • What gender do you identify with?

      • What is your age?

      • Describe your previous ASL exposure(if any)

  • Recognition Testing

    • 4 multiple choice answers under each testing video

  3.  Procedure

  • Sign up through SONA

  • Consent Form

    • instructing participants on study info and whether or not they wish to proceed

  • Learning video

  • 8 Testing items (immediate testing phases)

    • clip of sign without elaboration technique followed by recognition task

    • 4 questions corresponding to word elaborations, 4 with picture elaborations

  • 6 Demographic Items

    • takes about 2-3 minutes depending upon participant

  • 8 testing items (delayed testing phase)

    • same format as immediate testing phase

    • remaining 4 elaboration signs and 4 picture elaboration signs

  • Debriefing form

*Entire study length: 15-20 minutes
